The Patriot Guard Riders

Posted by Dr. Gray on Monday, March 23, 2015

How many of you have heard of “The Patriot Guard Riders?” If you haven’t heard of the organization, you may have already seen them without knowing it.

The Patriot Guard Riders are a nationwide group of men and women who volunteer their time in honor of our veterans and fallen soldiers. Their website states that their main mission is “to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives: 1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.; and, 2. Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protester or group of protesters. We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.”

That’s the formal stuff, but this is Straight Talk. Here are my thoughts: I have had the pleasure and absolute honor to meet some of these men & women and I am awed at their selfless devotion to service and honor. They spend their free time, and sometimes make time to show their respect for, not only our soldiers and veterans, but for their families as well. One individual I know spends three to four days per week attending and arranging for this display of thanks and respect… and he doesn’t even ride. He volunteers his time to help and support the families during an incredible time of loss, and refuses any form of payment or tribute. And he is just one of thousands.

As an entire organization of volunteers, refusing payment from the families they support, they are financed out of their own pockets and through donations from you and I. One of their mottoes is “Standing For Those Who Stood For US.” Of all the charitable groups that need and deserve our support, this has got to be one near the top. Please consider going to their website and assisting in whatever way you can. If you ride, sign up to participate in a couple missions. If you don’t ride, offer to volunteer with planning and family support. If nothing else, use your power to make a tax deductible financial contribution.

P.S. – This post was entirely unsolicited. I just love what these guys do.

Cool post. Are these the same people who protect the funerals of the fallen from the Westboro Baptist protests?

Yes, Ken. These are the guys. What an incredible group. I wrote this piece in March… Little did I know that I would be in their need just four months later. On July 4th of this year, my father passed away. Just two days later, one of these gentlemen showed up at my office and offered to support our family during our difficult time. Mind you… none of them had even seen this post, and I never mentioned to my patients about the health problems my father was battling. One of them spotted his obituary and immediately offered their support.

I was impressed with them before. I can’t come close to expressing how they exceeded even those lofty impressions.
