Stop Discrimination!!! Stop Killing Medicare Patients!!!

Posted by Dr. Gray on Friday, November 6, 2015

2760970STOP DISCRIMINATION!!! Did you know… Medicare patients continue to be denied quality, affordable, and safe treatment options?

  • Medicare requires, but WON’T PAY FOR, an examination… when performed by their chiropractic doctor.
  • Medicare requires, but WON’T PAY FOR, x-rays… when prescribed by their chiropractic doctor.
  • Medicare WON’T PAY FOR physical therapy… when prescribed by their chiropractic doctor.
  • Medicare WON’T PAY FOR any services by a specialist… if their chiropractic doctor referred them.
  • Medicare WON’T PAY FOR any imaging (CT scans, MRI, Ultrasound, etc.)… when prescribed by their chiropractic doctor.
  • Medicare WON’T PAY FOR ANYTHING performed or prescribed by a chiropractic doctor other than a chiropractic adjustment… but they’ll pay an untrained medical doctor (Manipulation: 835 hours – 0 hours… compare here) 400% MORE for the same service… that they’ve never trained to do.

It’s absolutely ridiculous. The greatest shortage in the American health care system today, is primary care providers. How often do you hear someone say they can’t get in to see their medical doctor for 3+ weeks? All this while 60,000+ chiropractic doctors could manage a huge percentage of those primary care visits, if only Medicare would allow it. Instead, we have to first refer to their PCP, who then refers to an imaging center, back to the PCP, then to the specialist… and on and on. Keep in mind, every step in this progression equals another out-of-pocket copay for the patient and more time without the care they need.

By far, the most common reason for a visit to the medical doctor is musculoskeletal pain. Sciatica, back pain, neck/shoulder pain, bursitis, tendinitis, tension headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc. Study after study continues to prove that chiropractic care is the most effective, cheapest, and safest form of treatment for musculoskeletal complaints.

  • Chiropractic doctors take 549 hours more than medical doctors in orthopedics.
  • Chiropractic doctors take 193 hours more than medical doctors in anatomy.
  • Chiropractic doctors take 201 hours more than medical doctors in radiology and diagnostic imaging.
  • Chiropractic doctors take 220 hours more than medical doctors in rehabilitation and exercise. (MD’s take zero)

Chiropractic doctors are recognized and licensed in all 50 states and around the world as physicians. Regardless of etiology, they are trained to take a detailed consultation and history followed by an examination when dealing with their patients just like all other physicians. They are trained to diagnose the most likely cause of a complaint, and then to determine the next proper course of action… whether that is further testing, further imaging, referral, or advise treatment.

The discrimination against chiropractic by the insurance companies and Medicare is profit-driven, and is costing patients quality of life in addition to money. Our aging population deserves the best health care this nation has to offer. They will continue to take advantage of us until we band together and demand change. The American Chiropractic Association is spearheading this process and has launched a petition that simply asks legislators to correct the inequity in Medicare. Please take one minute and add your name to this list, and then share it with a friend.

Dr. Gray … PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND!!! Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Reddit, E-mail, everywhere! Our Medicare patients deserve it!

Do You Love Going To Your Doctor?

Posted by Dr. Gray on Thursday, April 16, 2015

Gray Testimonial LogoHave you ever uttered the phrase, “I can’t wait to go see my doctor?” Actually, this phrase could be used two different ways. On one hand, you could be stating that you’re in so much pain that you can’t put off getting treatment any longer. However, the context I’m referring to is that in which you are looking forward to and excited about going to your appointment. I would guess that most people have rarely, if ever, felt so strongly and happy about their health care that they were excited for upcoming treatment visits.

There is at least one exception to this mindset… regular chiropractic patients. Chiropractic care consistently scores off-the-charts in patient satisfaction. When people finally try chiropractic care, learn how and why it works, and experience the health improvements it offers, there is a profound change in how they think about their health and their health care. What stimulated this question, you ask? This fantastic testimonial we received:

“Never before in my life have I ever looked forward to going to the doctor… until now. I definitely feel better after my visits, everything is in place, and I am relaxed. I am extremely pleased with the care I have received in your office. Everyone is warm and caring and I feel very ‘at home!’ I would absolutely recommend your office to anyone and everyone seeking chiropractic services. I can’t thank my friend enough for referring me to your office. Dr. Gray and his staff should all have awards for the wonderful work they do. I can’t say enough good things about my experience here! Thank you, thank you, thank you from one very satisfied and grateful customer!” – Minda

Now, THAT is awesome! I’m so humbled when we get testimonials like this. Unfortunately, only about 10% of the population participates in chiropractic health care. Think of how many more people could be helped if only someone would refer them to a good chiropractor. Which one are you? If you’re not a chiropractic patient, it’s time. If you are a chiropractic patient, tell someone else and encourage them to try it out. Most who aren’t chiropractic patients are either afraid or uninformed about how safe and effective it is. Let’s get the word out, and spread the benefits of chiropractic care. (for a few other cool benefits, click here)

See you soon! – Dr. Gray

Chiropractic First in Cases of Work Injuries

Posted by Dr. Gray on Wednesday, January 28, 2015

It always amazes me that readily available data is ignored. We’ve known for decades that:

  1. Back pain is the number one reason for missed time at work.
  2. Chiropractic care is the fastest and most successful treatment option at returning patients to work.
  3. Choosing chiropractic first costs less both initially and over the long term; yet…
  4. Employers and insurers continue to ignore these facts.

In most states, Worker’s Compensation claims must follow a certain order of progression. First, the employer admits the condition may be work-related. Then, the employer tells the employee where to go for evaluation and treatment.

Most employers really do care about their employees. They know what keeps their business running. The employer just wants their employee healthy and back on the job, so what do they do? They ask their insurance company where to send the employee. Here’s where the disconnect comes in… The insurance company DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THE PATIENT and doesn’t want to PAY ANY CLAIMS. Therefore, they recommend a contracted office who is rewarded for minimizing the claim.

The patient/employee gets minimal care and is returned to daily life without addressing the underlying cause of the condition with which they presented. This leads to further injury or a worsening of the condition… often when the patient is not at work. The employer thinks and the insurance company claims that the condition is no longer work-related, therefore they are not responsible. Ultimately, the patient is saddled with increased expenses, increased time off work, decreased productivity, and declining health.

What’s the answer? Employers must realize that THEY HAVE THE POWER AND CONTROL at the beginning of the case, and can make a more appropriate referral to a chiropractor first. Their unemployment insurance is still responsible and will cover their employee’s expenses… and they will have a healthier, safer, and more productive worker back on the job sooner and with less expense.

How does Chiropractic help heartburn, GERD, indigestion, etc?

Posted by Dr. Gray on Tuesday, December 16, 2014

“How can you expect me to believe that popping my back will help my stomach?” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this from patients… or skeptics. “They can make your back feel better, but that’s about all they’re good for.” Sound familiar? Well, hogwash! This is short-sighted and shows a glaring weakness in Western Medicine. The ultimate weakness and flaw in modern medicine is, of course, that it is primarily symptom based.

Think about it… Stomach hurt? Take Prilosec… Headache? Take a Tylenol… High blood sugar? Take Metformin… High cholesterol? Take Lipitor… Tingling in your feet? Take Neurontin… Almost every common treatment option is directed toward waiting for a symptom to start, then take something to help you ignore the symptom. The factor being overlooked is the original cause that led to the symptom.

Our body works on a primarily “cause-and-effect” relationship. Symptoms are merely one system of our body telling another system of our body what is going on, and the expression of how those systems react to the information available. When you put your hand too close to a fire, heat and pain are the symptoms that tell your muscular system to pull it back. When you have an infection, a fever is designed to raise the body temperature to a point which helps your body kill off the bug.

When you eat any food, your stomach produces a specific amount of acid and enzymes in order to properly digest exactly what you’ve eaten. When this is working properly, your symptom is that you feel good. However, symptoms such as heartburn and/or indigestion are warning signs that something within this chain of events is not working as it should.

When you take antacids for heartburn, Tylenol for fever, Lipitor for high cholesterol, etc., you are not treating the cause of your ailments. Frankly, you are only unplugging the “Check Engine” light that warns you of underlying dysfunction. When the “High Temp” light goes on in your vehicle, do you ignore it and keep going? Or do you first check the oil and coolant levels and determine why the car is overheating?

We’ve discussed other causes of heartburn and indigestion in the past, and have suggested alternatives to antacids and symptom controllers. The question for this post is, “What does chiropractic have to do with it?” For simplicity’s sake, I’ll mention the two most common ways that chiropractic alone can treat cases of G.I. dysfunction.

First, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is often caused by hiatal hernia. Hiatal hernia is when a portion of the stomach slides up through the diaphragm leading to back flow of stomach acids into the esophagus. Through gentle soft tissue manipulation, chiropractic is often very successful at pulling the stomach back down to its normal position below the diaphragm. This allows the diaphragm and lower esophageal sphincter to remain closed, preventing the back flow of acid into the esophagus. No more acid in the esophagus… No more reflux!

Second, the cause-and-effect relationships we discussed above, are absolutely dependent on communication between the different organ systems throughout the body. This communication is almost entirely run by the nervous system. In the most basic of description, your stomach sends information to the brain through the spine. Your brain sends information back to the stomach through the vagus nerve (which is one of the few nerves in the body that doesn’t travel through the spine). If these nerve signals are interfered with, then the messages being sent to and fro get confused. The end result is too much acid, not enough acid, undigested food, and ultimately the symptoms we commonly associate with heartburn and/or indigestion. Chiropractic works to remove the interference of these nerve signals so that the body can communicate and function as it was designed.

Is this a “cure-all?” Of course not! GI dysfunction is a complex issue with a multitude of causes… and unfortunately, most causes are self-inflicted. When you choose a doctor, pick one that will help you address the cause as well as symptoms. Treatment in these cases should always involve discussions regarding proper diet and lifestyle choices. Don’t settle for “Eat more fiber and get some exercise.” Ask for more detail: “Which foods will help my body heal? Which foods should I avoid? Do I need to supplement my diet with vitamins, enzymes, probiotics? How can I avoid drugs and surgery? How can I make my body function better, in addition to feeling better?

Joe Montana and Joe the Plumber… What do they have in common?

Posted by Dr. Gray on Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Beyond the obvious of having the name “Joe,” what do Joe Montana and Joe the Plumber have in common?

Joe Montana is a retired world class athlete and is considered by many to be one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. Life as a pro athlete may seem all fun and games, but 95% of it is hard work. From high school, through his career at Notre Dame, 13 years with the San Francisco 49’ers, and two years with the Kansas City Chiefs, there were daily workouts and hard exertion. Think about that for a second. Most of the time, all we see of pro athletes is three hours of a game once or twice per week. We watch and are amazed at their ability and strength. My question to you is, “Why should we be so amazed?” Look at the amount of work and effort they put in day in and day out when the cameras aren’t running. They run, they stretch, they lift, they walk, they eat well, they drink tons of water, … they do whatever they can to play better and avoid injury. Of course their skills are more efficient and they have fewer injuries! However, for every Joe Montana, there are 100’s of others who are working just as hard without the fame, without the glory, and without the fat paycheck. Thousands of athletes around the world will never achieve the level of success or be as good as Joe Montana, but they’re willing to work every bit as hard for the same reasons… to play better and avoid injury.

Now, let’s look at Joe the Plumber. Honestly, I just chose that name because it was recognizable but I could just as easily said Scott the Carpenter, Mary the Warehouse Queen, or John the Baker. The point is that regardless of what profession we choose, there is hard work involved. Every day, we have responsibilities that require us to physically exert ourselves. Instead of throwing a football, maybe it’s swinging a hammer. Instead of catching a pass, maybe it’s lifting a box to that third shelf. Instead of running 50 yards, maybe you have to stand on your feet for eight hours. If you think about it, we’re all athletes. We’re all playing this game of life… are you playing to win? Are you willing to work as hard as you can to play better and avoid injury? Just like professional athletes, we must also consider proper diet, regular stretching, exercise, and practice. If we want to live successful lives, we must be willing to do what successful people do.

As a part of his regular health regimen, Joe Montana regularly visited his chiropractor. He was seen on live television getting an adjustment before one of his four Superbowl wins, and has publicly praised chiropractic for keeping him healthy and helping him recover from injuries faster. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots recently said, “Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.” Tiger Woods, Evander Holyfield, Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Barry Bonds… all adamant that chiropractic is essential to optimal health and fitness.

If chiropractic can help the best of the best, think of how much more it can do for the rest of us.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – Wonderful Testimonial

Posted by Dr. Gray on Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Gray Testimonial LogoSince our last post regarding testimonials, we have received a very humbling number of compliments and stories. Thank you to all who have submitted your testimonials so far, and we look forward to hearing from those of you who are still working on yours.

Our next testimonial comes from a lovely woman regarding her late husband. I was blessed to have been able to work with Hank for several years before his passing. I always felt as though I learned as much from him as he did from me. Listen to these kind words submitted by his widow:

Dear Dr. Gray,

I don’t know what I would have done without your help! You have a special love and compassion for people that are hurting and in pain. My dear husband, Hank, suffered dearly with rheumatoid arthritis and had to retire from GM at age 49. He fell a lot and couldn’t do much walking. After years of pain, increasing debility, and every pain killer medication they could throw at him, we started going to Gray Chiropractic and he would get so much relief from his pain that he couldn’t wait for his next appointment. Your treatments were really helping relieve so much pain and suffering. I just can’t thank you enough. You are a great doctor, and I love and appreciate you so very much.

Name withheld for privacy

Now, if that doesn’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will. Thank you so much for these kind words! I just feel so thankful to have been able to help in whatever way I could.

If you, or someone else you know, suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, etc., I urge you to make chiropractic care an integral part of your treatment regimen. By their very nature, these conditions are neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) complaints… and there are no better NMS specialists than chiropractors. In addition to traditional chiropractic care, these cases should include recommendations on exercise, diet, physical therapy and concurrent pharmaceutical intervention when necessary.

Don’t fall for the turf battles between professions. On one side, you’ve got chiropractors telling you that medical doctors are killing people with medications. On the other side, you’ve got medical doctors telling you that chiropractors are unsafe. Both sides are being disingenuous, and are just trying to get a bigger piece of the healthcare dollar. Make sure you choose doctors who are open to working with other professions. It is most often a combination of treatment methods that achieves optimum results.

Post a comment, shoot us an email, give us a call, or just stop in if we can assist you or answer any questions. Our staff of physicians and therapists are here to help and we look forward to earning another testimonial like the kind words above.

Great Testimonial! – Knee Pain – Thanks!

Posted by Dr. Gray on Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Gray Testimonial LogoWe often get testimonials in office and from emails. I’m going to start posting a few so you can see some of the results we are getting for a wide variety of conditions. If you wish to submit your own testimony of your results at Gray Chiropractic, please send them from our contact page (Click Here).

Here’s a testimonial that we just received the other day:

I would like to thank Dr. Gray and staff for offering me an alternative solution for my knee pain other than “no activities for who knows how many weeks”. I’m an active woman who didn’t want to settle with any down time due to my knee pain. Dr. Gray used the infra-sound machine on the problem area, and I must say after a few visits, no more knee pain! Also, kudos to your friendly staff. I’m a believer. Dee

Thank you so much for those kind words, Dee! We are so happy that we’ve been able to help!

While not all cases respond as quickly as Dee’s, we’ve got a wide selection of treatment options that we can choose from in order to address your specific condition. In the past month, we’ve had the pleasure of treating a whole host of knee complaints, such as: degenerative arthritis, chondromalacia patella, Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease, sprained medial meniscus, sprained lateral collateral ligament, and more. On some cases, we’ve used infrasound. Some have responded to traditional chiropractic care. Some have done well with acupuncture. For others we’ve used ultrasound, rehabilitative exercises, etc. Often, the best results involve a combination of treatment options.

We would love the opportunity to work with you, too. If you’ve got knee pain, or other health conditions that we can help you with, please feel free to contact us.
